WHAT YOUR HALLOWEEN COSTUME REVEALS ABOUT YOUR SELF-ASSURANCE, SELF-CONTROL, OR CONFORMITY?
For decades, the most popular Halloween dresses were vampires, zombie nurses, and lumberjacks with an axe through their heads. Nonetheless, the introduction of social media has expanded costume options.
Memes, tweets, Marvel characters, and significant celebrity stories of the year all influence the decisions of die-hard Halloween enthusiasts, who want to wow their peers with the most current and unique costumes. And most crucially, to impress social media.
Andy, a clinical psychologist at the Clinic for mental healthcare, believes that one of the reasons Halloween is so amazing is because it allows people to dress up and flaunt themselves in ways they may not normally. “You might be a whole different person with a totally different personality. You can wear a fantastic costume when trick-or-treating with your children or attending a Halloween party. And the nicest part is that you receive sweets!”
The days when Halloween was considered a night for children are long gone, and adults will certainly spend more time preparing their own costumes than those of their children. However, family-themed costumes are extremely popular, with the way parents dress their children serving as a subliminal message of how they like the world to perceive them.
Christine Andy, counselling psychologist and education director at The Lighthouse Arabia, observes, “Families may incline toward adopting themed costumes that reflect their values and attributes.” The costumes that parents choose for their children may reflect their hopes for them in real life. They may choose characteristics who are courageous, strong, intellectual, and compassionate for themselves and their children because they seek to be seen similarly in their different communities.”
Whether you disguise yourself with a mask or a meme, this year’s Halloween costume may be appropriately spooky.
Why Get Dressed?
Adults have plenty of daily responsibilities. “On Halloween, work, house, children, and bills may be put on hold,” says Andy. “It is a period when people can assume a persona different than their own; we can alter our reality for at least a day.”
The practise of donning costumes on All Hallows’ Eve, the night when our ancestors believed ghosts walked the earth, dates back more than 2,000 years. It is believed that trick-or-treating originated around the 15th century as a practice known as mumming or guising. The practice permitted individuals to imitate spirits in order to gather offerings while hiding from the spirits in order to protect themselves.
“Dress-up gives adults the opportunity to play,” adds Andy. “Dressing up provides grownups with the ability to access different parts of themselves and their creative sides. It also allows adults to connect with their inner kids, the part of them that still desires to play, have fun, let their hair down, and be carefree. Individuals’ imaginations are stretched by Halloween’s role-playing, imaginative costumes, and many identities.”
What Your Costume Choice Reveals About You
Whether you pluck an old favourite from the dress-up box or spend a month methodically crafting a costume, what you wear on Halloween can reveal a great deal about you.
Dr. explains that persons who want to question social conventions and stand out in a sea of conformity typically choose frightening and shocking costumes. “Sexy costumes can be worn by individuals who seek to express their inner strength and seductiveness. People that dress as superheroes may do so in order to feel like a superhero.”
Indeed, one of the most enjoyable aspects of the evening is assuming an entirely different identity. Psychologists refer to a phenomenon known as enclothed cognition, which suggests that our clothing choices might affect and influence our mental state. It explains the bright, lavish clothes worn by many performers on stage, as well as concepts such as power dressing, which is worn by those who wish to appear powerful or dominant in the workplace.
According to Andy, our Halloween costumes reveal more about our personalities than we may realize. “The style of costume you choose can be related to a variety of factors, such as a desire to explore features that aren’t very evident in you or an attempt to reflect a part of yourself that you typically try to hide.
“Those that wear ‘strong’ costumes may be more self-assured, aggressive, brave, and in control of their lives. However, others may behave similarly since they are habitually timid, risk-averse, and lack assertiveness skills.”
Andy adds that dressing as a superstar or pop star is an opportunity to live a fantasy life for one day.
